In December 2017 we bought Rise Martial Arts from its owner, Josh McNamara. We have been training at Rise for over 5 years, and the Rise community has been an integral part of our lives. With Josh starting another business this seemed like a good time to transition to owning the gym in addition to training in it!
Our vision for the gym is for it to be a place where anyone - regardless of age, size, athletic ability, gender identity - can train in the martial arts. Our focus is on high-quality instruction, an inclusive atmosphere, and an appreciation that martial arts is a life-time learning experience. Whether you're looking for a fun way to get a little exercise, develop confidence and self-defence skills, or become a competitor, we have the classes and the instructors for you!
A bit about us:
In our day jobs, we're both faculty at Oregon State (School of Engineering) and we both work with robots. Bill started judo in 1977, and Cindy started hapkido in college in the early 90s. We met in a hapkido class at Brown University in 1994, when we were both in grad school there. We moved to Corvallis over five years ago, to work at OSU. We have two kids, one of whom trains BJJ at the gym, and the other a gymnast who enjoys coming down to the gym to practice and hang on the rings.
Bill Smart has almost 40 years of experience in a variety of martial arts. He holds a black belt (2nd dan) in Hapkido, a brown belt in judo (1st kyu), a blue belt in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, and minor ranks in a number of other styles (Krav Maga, Arnis/Kali, Jeet Kune Do). He also holds his sporting Colours in Judo from the University of Dundee and is a previous Scottish Student national bronze medalist.
Cindy Grimm has over 30 years of experience studying a variety of martial arts (Hapkido - 2nd dan, Aikido - 1st dan, Pencak Silat, Arnis, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Judo). She has a brown belt in Brazillian Jiu Jitsu, and has won a number of competitons in Oregon. She taught Hapkido for 4 years, both at UC Berkeley and at Brown University.
