What Makes Us Different

Inclusivity

One of our core values is that everybody feels welcome in the gym regardless of age, race, sexual orientation or gender identity. We recognize that everyone brings different experiences with them and we take responsibility for fostering a space where all members feel respected, safe, and supported.

Safety

People of all ages and abilities are drawn to martial arts, and we strive to create an environment where people can train without getting injured. Our instructors take extra care when teaching techniques that carry a higher risk of injury, providing detailed instruction on how to protect yourself and your training partners. We largely follow the IBJJF guidelines for restricted techniques to ensure responsible and sustainable training for all members.

Support

Competition is an exciting and rewarding part of jiu-jitsu at every belt level. We offer dedicated competition preparation classes and often have several members competing at the same tournament. It’s common for our team to travel together, coach one another, and provide support on and off the mats. Having your Professor or coach present for your matches can make a meaningful difference regardless of the outcome. Supporting each other throughout the competition process is a value we strongly believe in.

General Questions

Q: Do you offer free trial classes?

A: Yes, we offer a free trial day so you can experience the gym and meet our community. You are welcome to do both classes on your trial day.

Q: Do I need to be in shape to start? How hard is this going to be?

A: You absolutely do not need to be in shape to start. Many people begin martial arts to improve their fitness. You can go at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and build conditioning over time — that’s part of the journey.

Q: What makes your gym different?

A: Our focus is on a welcoming, ego-free environment where people can learn at their own pace. We balance technical instruction, supportive culture, and optional competitive opportunities so everyone can find their path.

Q: How young can my child start?

A: Most kids can start around age 5–6, depending on their attention span and comfort in a group setting. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help you decide whether your child is ready.

Q: Is jiu jitsu safe?

A: Like any physical activity, there’s some risk, but we emphasize controlled training, communication, and respect. Students are encouraged to train at a pace that feels safe and to tap early and often.

Q: Will I have to spar or roll right away?

A: No. Sparring is always optional. Many people spend their first several weeks just learning movements and drills until they feel comfortable. You can ease in at your own pace.
