Frequently Asked Questions

Q: Do you offer free trial classes?

A: Yes, we offer a free trial day so you can experience the gym and meet our community. You are welcome to do both classes on your trial day.

Q: When should I arrive for my first class?

A: We recommend arriving about 10–15 minutes early, especially for your first class, so you have time to check in, change, and meet the instructor.

Q: I’m nervous and have never done martial arts before… is that normal?

A: Completely normal. Most of our members started with zero experience. Our classes are structured to be beginner-friendly, and you’ll never be expected to know anything on day one, or even on day 1000. Everyone remembers being new, and our community is very supportive.

Q: What should I expect on my first trial class?

A: Expect a welcoming, low-pressure environment! When you arrive, one of our instructors will introduce themselves, show you around, and help you get set up. Classes involve technique instruction, partner drills, and sometimes light positional sparring games. You can absolutely go at your own pace — there’s no expectation to spar on your first day unless you want to. Our goal is simply to help you have a fun, positive first experience.

Q: Do I need to be in shape to start? How hard is this going to be?

A: You absolutely do not need to be in shape to start. Many people begin martial arts to improve their fitness. You can go at your own pace, take breaks when needed, and build conditioning over time — that’s part of the journey.

Q: Will I have to spar or roll right away?

A: No. Sparring is always optional. Many people spend their first several weeks just learning movements and drills until they feel comfortable. You can ease in at your own pace.

Q: It seems like your gym competes a lot. Is it going to feel competitive during the classes?

A: Many members of our gym choose to compete because working toward a specific goal is a great way to accelerate your jiu jitsu learning, and because it’s fun! However, the intensity of competition jiu jitsu does not translate to a high-pressure gym environment. In the classes leading up to a competition, instructors may cover positions or strategies relevant to competitors, but the overall structure and welcoming vibe remain the same. Members who want higher-intensity training have optional competition classes and extra sessions available.

Q: Can I wear a gi with patches from another gym? Do I need my own gi to train here?

A: We don’t have strict rules about gi brands or patches. All colors are welcome. We just ask that your gi is clean and appropriate for jiu jitsu training. Very new students can borrow or rent a gi, but we ask committed members to purchase their own. We carry affordable, high-quality gis and can also recommend other options.

Q: How young can my child start?

A: Most kids can start around age 5–6, depending on their attention span and comfort in a group setting. If you’re unsure, we’re happy to help you decide whether your child is ready.

Q: Can I pause my membership if I travel or get injured?

A: We are a membership based gym and relay on our membership dues even when you are out of town for a short while. There is no fee to cancel you membership however, if you rejoin within 2 months there is a fee of $60. We can pause your membership if you get injured.

Q: How often are belt promotions?

A: Promotions don’t follow a strict schedule. They’re based on individual progress, consistency, attitude, and technical development. Instructors evaluate students continuously and award promotions when they feel a student is ready.

Q: Do you have women who train at your gym?

A: Absolutely. We have a strong and growing community of women who train seriously and compete often, from complete beginners to more experienced students. Our gym culture emphasizes respect, inclusion, and supportive training for everyone.

Q: Has your entire staff gone through criminal background checks?

A: Yes, all staff members working with minors have completed background checks. Safety is a top priority for our community.

Q: Do you offer private lessons or small group privates?

A: Yes! Our instructors offer private lessons for individuals or small groups, focusing on jiu jitsu or other styles we teach. See our Private Lessons page for details.
